Classics at the Latchis: King Kong (1933)

October 2 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

CLASSICS AT THE LATCHIS returns on Friday, Oct, 2 at 7:00 p.m. with a screening of the original 1933 KING KONG. The screening will take place in the historic Main Theatre at the Latchis and is presented by Sages and Latchis Arts. Admission is $10, $8 for seniors and students, and tickets are available at the door.

Actress Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) and director Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) travel to the Indian Ocean to do location shoots for Denham’s new jungle picture. Along the way, the actress meets and falls for rugged First Mate John Driscoll (Bruce Cabot). Upon arriving at a mysterious island, Ann is taken hostage by natives who prepare her as a sacrifice to the enormous ape Kong who rules over their jungle. But when Ann is rescued and Kong is captured, the real trouble begins.

A revolutionary movie that took special effects to a new level and pioneered the monster movie genre, KING KONG also showcases what is widely considered the first great film score (by Max Steiner). It is ranked No. 41 on the American Film Institute’s list of the top 100 movies of all time.

Roger Ebert praised the film’s mastery of a wide range of special effects and added, “King Kong is more than a technical achievement. It is also a curiously touching fable in which the beast is seen, not as a monster of destruction, but as a creature that in its own way wants to do the right thing. … There is something ageless and primeval about ‘King Kong’ that still somehow works.”
