DESCRIPTION:The Windham Philharmonic closes its season on Monday\, June 1\, at 7:00pm\, at the Latchis Theatre with an adventurous evening\, designed to provoke\, inspire\, and delight: six orchestral movements\, six composers\, six moods. Watch us invent a Symphony that doesn’t exist! \nTo start\, the first movement of Nielsen’s Fifth Symphony. This music is thrilling\, sublime and combative: a solo snare drum attempts\, literally and persistently\, to derail the orchestra. The large body of players refuse\, and we find ourselves in a melee of asymmetrical resistance…we remain committed to RESISTING. \nBruckner’s slow movement from his Sixth Symphony offers Peace after Grieving: we all know there is so much to grieve. \nWe lighten the mood with some extravagant ridiculousness: Stravinsky’s Circus Polka — written for a prima ballerina and 50 elephants\, including a cow called Modoc\, that was performed by Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey in 1941 at Madison Square Garden. \nVon Weber’s tiny\, quicksilver scherzo from his Second Symphony calls from on stage ‘Catch me if you can!’ \nElgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4 (not the graduation march) ties up all the loose ends: Resolution. \nAnd our evening closes with the finale of Beethoven’s ballet (but no elephants) The Creatures of Prometheus: a dancing rondo\, an Envoi\, a door held warmly open: have an enchanted\, enchanting evening! \nThe Windham Philharmonic offers some serious matters\, a little adventure\, much variety and fun\, and\, we promise you\, magic\, and an encore. \nAdmission is by donation at the door. DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts\, Brooks Memorial Library and Friends of Brooks Memorial Library announce the launch of a Sci Fi Film Series\, beginning with GATTACA on Sunday\, June 7\, at 4:00pm. Admission is by donation. \nInspired by Brooks Memorial Library’s Sci-Fi Reading Group\, the film series will convene monthly to watch great movies from the sci-fi genre. People are invited to stay after the screenings for a conversation about the film. \nReleased in 1997\, GATTACA stars Ethan Hawke as Vincent Freeman\, who has always fantasized about traveling into outer space\, but is grounded by his status as a genetically inferior in-valid. He decides to fight his fate by purchasing the genes of Jerome Morrow (Jude Law)\, a laboratory-engineered valid. He assumes Jerome’s DNA identity and joins the Gattaca space program\, where he falls in love with Irene (Uma Thurman). An investigation into the death of a Gattaca officer complicates Vincent’s plans. \nRated PG-13\, GATTACA r3uns 1 hour and 46 minutes. It has been called\, “Among the very best of all the original ‘thoughtful’ sci-fi movies out there.”

Lubin\, author of Ready for My Close-Up: The Making of Sunset Boulevard and the Dark Side of the Hollywood Dream. \nConsistently cited by cinephiles and scholars alike as one of the greatest American Films of all time\, SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950) starts Gloria Swanson as an aging silent film queen who refuses to accept that her time in the limelight has ended. She hires a young\, down-on-his-luck screenwriter (William Holden) to help with her movie comeback. As things unfold\, the situation devolves into violence\, madness and death. \nDirected by Billy Wilder\, the film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won three\, including Best Story and Screenplay\, Best Art Direction and Best Score. A hit in its day\, although it lost to All About Eve for Best Picture\, Sunset Boulevard is a classic noir drama that remains compelling to his day\, now 75 years after its release. It is No. 16 on the American Film Institute’s Top 100 American films of all-time. \nPraised as “a deft account of a Hollywood classic” and a “razor-sharp analysis (that) deepens the history and power of the cinematic masterpiece\,” David M.
