SUMMARY:Windham Philharmonic: Symphony of Siblings - June 1
DESCRIPTION:The Windham Philharmonic closes its season on Monday\, June 1\, at 7:00pm\, at the Latchis Theatre with an adventurous evening\, designed to provoke\, inspire\, and delight: six orchestral movements\, six composers\, six moods. Watch us invent a Symphony that doesn’t exist! \nTo start\, the first movement of Nielsen’s Fifth Symphony. This music is thrilling\, sublime and combative: a solo snare drum attempts\, literally and persistently\, to derail the orchestra. The large body of players refuse\, and we find ourselves in a melee of asymmetrical resistance…we remain committed to RESISTING. \nBruckner’s slow movement from his Sixth Symphony offers Peace after Grieving: we all know there is so much to grieve. \nWe lighten the mood with some extravagant ridiculousness: Stravinsky’s Circus Polka — written for a prima ballerina and 50 elephants\, including a cow called Modoc\, that was performed by Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey in 1941 at Madison Square Garden. \nVon Weber’s tiny\, quicksilver scherzo from his Second Symphony calls from on stage ‘Catch me if you can!’ \nElgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4 (not the graduation march) ties up all the loose ends: Resolution. \nAnd our evening closes with the finale of Beethoven’s ballet (but no elephants) The Creatures of Prometheus: a dancing rondo\, an Envoi\, a door held warmly open: have an enchanted\, enchanting evening! \nThe Windham Philharmonic offers some serious matters\, a little adventure\, much variety and fun\, and\, we promise you\, magic\, and an encore. \nAdmission is by donation at the door. SUMMARY:Classics at the Latchis' Sunset Boulevard
DESCRIPTION:Latchis Arts’ Classics at the Latchis series continues with SUNSET BOULEVARD on Sunday\, June 14\, at 7:00pm\, including an introduction\, afterthoughts and a book signing with David M. Lubin\, author of Ready for My Close-Up: The Making of Sunset Boulevard and the Dark Side of the Hollywood Dream. \nConsistently cited by cinephiles and scholars alike as one of the greatest American Films of all time\, SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950) starts Gloria Swanson as an aging silent film queen who refuses to accept that her time in the limelight has ended. She hires a young\, down-on-his-luck screenwriter (William Holden) to help with her movie comeback. As things unfold\, the situation devolves into violence\, madness and death. \nDirected by Billy Wilder\, the film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won three\, including Best Story and Screenplay\, Best Art Direction and Best Score. A hit in its day\, although it lost to All About Eve for Best Picture\, Sunset Boulevard is a classic noir drama that remains compelling to his day\, now 75 years after its release. It is No. 16 on the American Film Institute’s Top 100 American films of all-time. \nPraised as “a deft account of a Hollywood classic” and a “razor-sharp analysis (that) deepens the history and power of the cinematic masterpiece\,” David M. Lubin’s Ready for My Close-Up is a cultural history and making-of book that explores the creation of this very meta and uniquely fascinating film. Copies of the book will be for sale at the event. \nLubin is a professor\, curator\, scholar and writer\, author of eight books on American art\, film and popular culture and frequent contributor to many major publications\, especially as a reviewer for Rolling Stone. \nSUNSET BOULEVARD: Ready for my Close-Up is sponsored by Sages and Latchis Arts. Tickets are $15 in advance\, $16 at the door.

SUMMARY:Amy Goodman: Steal This Story\, Please! with Q&A - June 19
DESCRIPTION:Fiercely independent journalist Amy Goodman has spent three decades holding the powerful to account\, reporting from war zones and the Democracy Now! newsroom. Goodman will be coming to the Latchis Theatre with the new film\, STEAL THIS STORY\, PLEASE!  on Friday\, June 19\, at 7:00pm. This special screening of STEAL THIS STORY\, PLEASE! includes a Q&A with Amy Goodman\, moderated by  journalist David Goodman\, host of VT Digger’s Vermont Conversation. \nSteal This Story\, Please! is a gripping portrait of the trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to truth-telling spans three decades of turbulent history. From the frontlines of global conflicts to the organized chaos of her daily news show Democracy Now!\, Goodman broadcasts stories and voices routinely silenced by commercial media. \nIn Steal This Story\, Please!\, Oscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin craft a riveting portrait of journalism’s power – and peril – in an era of corporate control and political attacks on truth. \n Steal This Story\, Please!  begins a week-long run at the Latchis Theatre on June 19\, and Goodman will be here for the first screening with a Q&A after the film. Additional Latchis screenings will be announced soon. \nTickets for the June 19 event are $15 in advance\, $16 at the door. After June 19\, tickets will be available at the Latchis at regular movie admission prices. Advance tickets are available at:https://app.arts-people.com/?show=334184
