SUMMARY:The Met: Live in HD: El Ultimo Sueno de Friday y Diego - May 30
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 30\, at 1:00pm\, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera\, El Ultimo Sueno de Friday y Diego\, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera\, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. \nFashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth\, the story depicts Frida\, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard\, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego\, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love\, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. \nMusic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera\, a “confident\, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production\, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings\, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. \nEl Ultimo Sueno de Friday y Diego runs 2 hours and 50 minutes\, with one intermission. General admission is $22\, $20 for MET CLUB FOREVER members and $10 for students. For questions or advance credit card purchases\, please contact Jon Potter at 802-254-1109 or jon@latchisarts.org.

SUMMARY:Pistachio Wars
DESCRIPTION:Pistachio Wars: How your snacks support environmental destruction &\nglobal conflict\nBRATTLEBORO – What do your snacks have to do with environmental destruction and global\nconflict? Find out on Sunday\, May 31\, at a film and panel discussion at the Latchis Theater.\nPistachio Wars follows journalist Yasha Levine through California’s Central Valley as he tracks\nthe influence of a billionaire couple and how their agricultural practices\, lobbying efforts and\nphilanthropy are harming local farmers and migrant communities and tipping the geopolitical\nbalance. \nLevine and director Rowan Wernhem investigate the Wonderful Company\, a private corporation\nrun by Beverly Hills billionaires Stewart and Lynda Resnick. As of 2023\, Wonderful Pistachios\nwas the largest producer of pistachios in the US\, which has eclipsed Iran as the primary\nproducer and exporter of the popular nuts.\nThe Wonderful Company’s long list of popular brands also includes Halos mandarins\, Fiji water\,\nPom juices\, and Teleflora flowers. Its massive California water grab has left low-income\ncommunities and family farms parched\, poisoned\, and struggling to survive.\nThe Resnicks are also active supporters of hawkish US think tanks\, outspoken Iran critics in\nCongress\, and Israeli military interests – all beneficiaries that foment hostile relations between\nthe U.S. and Iran and benefit the American pistachio industry.\n“It’s also very circular because American foreign policy created the Resnicks’ business: U.S.\nmeddling in Iran and subsequent economic sanctions created the conditions for the emergence\nof California’s pistachio industry. Then profits from that industry circulate and cycle right back\ninto this imperial machine that works to basically create a consensus in America that Iran is our\ngreatest enemy\,” Levine said in an interview in The Nation.\nFilm Focus Online called Pistachio Wars a “punchy\, eye-opening documentary that reveals how\nsomething as simple as a nut connects to environmental collapse\, political lobbying\, and even\ninternational conflict.”\nThe May 31 film screening and discussion are sponsored by No Appetite for Apartheid-Southern\nVermont\, the local branch of a national effort to educate consumers\, stores\, and restaurants\nabout products that support Israel’s apartheid and genocide against Palestinians.\n“It’s easy to be fooled by cutesy marketing campaigns and happy-sounding names\, but these\nproducts are causing environmental disaster in California and supporting U.S. empire abroad\,”\nsaid Emmet Mahdavi of NA4A. “By understanding where our food dollars go\, we’re empowered\nto contribute to justice around the globe.”\nPistachio Wars will be shown on Sunday\, May 31\, at 4 p.m.\, at The Latchis. A panel discussion\nwill follow the screening. Suggested admission is $10 by donation and will help support Latchis\nArts.
